Greenhouse maintenance is a necessary task when keeping an indoor garden or solarium. Taking care of the structure and its parts results in a greenhouse that will provide years of shelter for plants and flora. Although it is a chore some may not look forward to, maintaining a greenhouse can be a simple task that delivers immediate positive results.

Step1

Check all around the base of the greenhouse structure where it is affixed to the slab of ground. Any structural weaknesses must be addressed immediately as this one area ensures the stability of the entire space.

Take note of all the glass in the greenhouse. Make certain all of the window glazing is in place and of sound adherence. Re-glaze any window that might be allowing outside elements into the structure.

Ensure all of the vents or air ducts are working properly. Oil any moving shutters or louvers.

Step4

Inspect the doors of the greenhouse. Free doors of any obstructions and maintain hinges for easy opening.

Step5

Remove any debris or material from the gutter to allow easy run off of water. This prevents rusting and water damage to the roof structure.

Step6

Wash all windows monthly to remove dirt, dust and other contaminants. Use warm water and a brush to maintain a clean environment for the enclosure.

Tips & Warnings

Inspect each new plant brought into the greenhouse for insects.
Keep the lawn well maintained outside of the greenhouse to limit the insect population nearest the space.
Do not wear loud or bright colors in or around the greenhouse as these colors strongly attract insects.
Use caution when cleaning or working around the greenhouse glass. Some areas may contain cracks or sharp edges. Wear gardening gloves when inspecting glass.
