How to Get a Job on the Hill
Capitol Hill is located at the end of the Washington Mall in Washington D.C. But the jobs on the Hill are actually to the left and the right of that big white building. The House of Representative and the Senate are mixed in these other buildings. If you want to work in one of those buildings, follow these steps for finding a job on the Hill.

Visit the House of Representatives website. The site contains an array of information on who is who in the House, what they do and how to get in on all that fun. Select a link on the page. One link allows you to add your resume, another link has vacancy announcements and another link sends you to other job search resources. Follow the links and get your resume filed.

Visit the Senate's website. The Senate has a Placement Office. Contact the office for the list of openings and services to place you. Ask their advice on what steps to take to get into your dream job on the Hill.

Go to USA Jobs' website which contains all the federal jobs available. Be aware of the job prerequisites and added points for people falling into certain categories. If you are a veteran or disabled, you get extra points. The application process adds points and the people with the most points are evaluated for the job openings.

Get to know a nonprofit organization that is friendly with the congressman you have chosen. Many congressmen have relationships with the leaders of like-minded nonprofit organizations. Find out what committees the congressman is on. Find out what organizations are active in that type of work and go through them. Politicians trust those they know. Network around D.C. with those organizations and ask them to let you know of any job opportunities on the Hill that open up.

Do an internship. Contact the college you attend or graduated from and ask about internships on the Hill. Do an internship with the congressman's nonprofit friends as well. Take a job that will get you in the door and then move up from there.
