Many residents of coastal areas remain unconcerned about hurricanes despite devastating damage in recent years. No matter where you live, think ahead and prepare your family and your home for this hurricane season by shopping for essential items in advance. Read on to learn how to shop for hurricane season.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Purchase a first-aid kit. It should contain essential medications in addition to basic supplies such as bandages, triple-antibiotic, gauze and tape.

  2. Step 2

Stock up on water to ensure you and your family remain hydrated should a disaster occur. You should plan a minimum of three gallons of drinking water per person.

  3. Step 3

Load up on a variety of canned goods including fruits, vegetables, soups, beans and other staples. Buy a manual can opener if you don't already have one.

  4. Step 4

Find protective clothing and rain gear for everyone. You can't anticipate the type of conditions you'll be living in should a storm create an emergency.

  5. Step 5

Gather a battery-powered radio, extra batteries and multiple flashlights to get you through times where you may be without light and electricity.

  6. Step 6

Buy a sealed, plastic container, such as a tub with handles, to place batteries, radio and other items that shouldn't get wet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place all hurricane preparation items in a single spot in your home. Easy access will be important in an emergency.
