The holidays are fast approaching, and this year you decide that store bought pie crust just is not going to cut it. You want to make a homemade pie crust. Whether a flour pie crust or a graham cracker crust, homemade pie crusts are fairly easy to make and rewarding to eat. Read on to learn how to make a pie crust.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening, chilled
  • 3 tbsp. cold water
  1. Step 1

Combine the flour and salt in a medium bowl. Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs. Sprinkle the water over the flour mixture. Stir with a fork to moisten, adding more water a few drops at a time as needed until the dough forms properly.

  2. Step 2

Gather all dough pieces into a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes before rolling.

  3. Step 3

Roll out the dough, and place it in a pie plate. Fill with desired contents. Try apple, cherry or even chicken pot pie. Bake according to the individual pie directions. This standard pie crust makes eight servings.

Tips & Warnings
  • Place wax paper under and on top of the dough before rolling. This will prevent the dough from sticking to the rolling pin.
  • To make graham cracker crust, combine 1 ½ cup graham cracker crumbs, 1/3 cup melted butter and 3 tbsp. sugar in a bowl. Stir with a fork until the mixture is crumbly. Press into the bottom and sides of a pie pan. Bake for eight to 10 minutes at 350 degrees until lightly browned. Allow to cool before adding the pie filling.
