Step 1
Supervise them constantly. It takes a matter of seconds for a child to disappear underwater or endanger themselves. The best way to keep them safe is to stay alert and attentive.
-
Step 2
Keep the child in inflatables or life vests. While this is in no way a replacement for adequate supervision, it can buy a few seconds if the child gets a few steps ahead.
-
Step 3
Teach kids water safety from the beginning. Kids should know the dangers and risks associated with pools, and rules should be set and enforced strictly at the earliest age possible to keep them safe.
-
Step 4
Make sure any accessible personal pools have a gated enclosure that can be locked to prevent accidents. Keep this gate locked at all times. Kids can sneak out to go for a quick swim without any warning.
-
Step 5
Invest in a pool alarm. There are several options available depending on where the pool is situated. Gate alarms, perimeter alarms, wave sensor alarms, infrared light beam alarms and noise alarms are all available for your kids' protection.
-
Step 6
Purchase a wrist band alarm for children staying at the house. These alarms lock with a key onto the child's wrist. They emit a high-decibel alarm through a base placed anywhere in or around the area when the wristband goes underwater.
