1
Talk to professionals at social service organizations in your community. These people can explain the pros and cons of intensive outpatient treatment programs and inpatient programs and make recommendations for programs in your area.
-
2
Call the rehab facilities and ask questions. Try to get an idea of what a typical day is like. What types of treatments are used? Some programs are based totally on the 12 steps, while others integrate cognitive therapy and other modalities into a person's treatment plan. Find out all you can about each facility before making a choice.

3
Contact your insurance company. Ask what programs are covered and how many days you are allowed. Get information about copays, deductibles and other financial restrictions. Keep a notebook of information on all of the facilities that you call--they will all begin to run together after awhile, so don't trust your memory.

4
Ask about private pay options. Many insurance plans don't offer good coverage for substance abuse. Rehab centers know this, so many are offering better rates for people who want to pay for the stay at the facility themselves. This gives people with poor or no rehab coverage an opportunity to get the help they need.
