Step 1
Determine the required skill sets for the career that interests you. Research the available career choices within your preferred field to narrow your choices. More drastic career changes require more research and planning than a career change within your current field.
-
Step 2
Evaluate you current skills. Many of your current skills may easily transfer to a new career. Pursuing a new career with some overlap is more feasible than completely changing directions.
-
Step 3
Take classes or get a second degree. Attend training classes to learn required skills for your new career. Take a look at the training, certification and degree classes that your local community college has to offer. Local companies typically work with colleges to establish a course schedule to help you learn the needed skills to change careers effectively.
-
Step 4
Call on friends and family to help with your job search or recommendations. Networking is important when changing careers. People in your network can alert you to job openings and they can recommend you to the hiring departments when you apply.
-
Step 5
Freshen up your resume and interview skills. Since a traditional experience-based resume does not reflect your new skills, create a skills-based resume to show off your new qualifications. Add any courses or training you've received to pursue this new career. During the interview, highlight your background that is most applicable to the new career.
