Complete the education necessary to become a CIS Application Administrator. Usually this is a minimum of a bachelor's degree in either computer science or business administration (or both). An MBA degree, however, will give you an advantage over other potential job candidates.

Acquire significant experience with managing database systems and computer mainframes by working in the field of information technology.

Use your undergraduate and training years to focus heavily on how to troubleshoot operating systems like Microsoft Windows and Linux as well as how to implement a full recovery in case of a system failure.

Learn how to implement new software programs and databases and how to instruct others in their use. These skills will be vital once you become a CIS application administrator and need to teach company employees how to use unfamiliar systems and programs.

Develop supervisory and interpersonal communication skills, since you will be required to inform people, through both written and verbal communication, as to the complete and detailed status of the CIS operating system at any given time. In addition, you will need train the information technology staff of the company on any implementations of new databases and software in a clear and effective manner.
