One of the most important aspects of hunter safety is learning to stay visible when hunting. Learning how to camouflage yourself, yet remain visible to fellow hunters, is quite simple and can prevent serious accidents.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Orange-blaze gear and clothing
  • Camouflage clothing
  • Camouflage gear for your rifle or hunting weapon
  • Dark-colored socks, undershirts and undergarments

Stay Visible When on Hunting Excursions

  1. Step 1

Opt for fluorescent hunting clothing for optimum visibility in any hunting situation. Blend camouflage clothing and gear with fluorescent items. For example, wear a camouflage shirt and pants with a bright, fluorescent vest.

  2. Step 2

Dress for success by coordinating your color and type of camouflage with the type of hunting you will be doing. For example, if you are hunting deer, steer away from brown and white hues of camouflage. Avoid colors that are similar to the game you are hunting to ensure that other hunters will not mistake you for a target.

  3. Step 3

Wear dark undergarments, such as undershirts and socks. Wearing dark underclothing will help to ensure that your outfit is well blended, and the dark contrast will enable fellow hunters to see that you are not a target.

  4. Step 4

Create a subtle, yet blended visual flag by wearing dark-colored hunting boots versus camouflaged boots. If a fellow hunter spots your movement, he will be able to distinguish you from foliage by the contrast of your boot color.

  5. Step 5

Stay in clear, open hunting spots and areas while hunting rather than hiding in concealed, highly foliated areas. For optimum results, try setting up a hunting blind in a prime hunting region. Blinds are usually elevated, tower-like structures that have a small, covered area for hunters to sit in and observe the landscape for hunting targets.

Tips & Warnings
  • Check local blaze-orange laws for the state and region in which you will be hunting. For example, in Texas, hunters must wear blaze-orange caps and a minimum of 400 square inches of blaze-orange material that covers the front and back of the body, such as shirts, vests, jackets and pants. Exclusions include hunters who will be hunting from inside a vehicle and those who are hunting certain types of game, such as bighorn sheep or turkey.
  • Coordinate your camouflage with the type of hunting you will be participating in. For example, if you will be turkey hunting, avoid colors that are similar to turkey colors, such as black, red, white, blue and black. This ensures that other hunters will not mistake your camouflage for game and fire at you by accident.
