Things You'll Need:
- Decoys
- Blind or stand
- Scent-eliminating soap and spray
- Buck archery target
- Windsocks
-
Step 1
Keep your decoy scent-free by washing it in odor- and scent-eliminating soap, and then spraying it generously with scent-eliminating spray before your hunt. Deer are highly sensitive to scents, and your hunting efforts could be pointless if you do not make sure your decoy is scent free.
-
Step 2
Scout out a place to put the decoy that is at least 15 to 25 yards away from your blind or stand. If you are hunting with a gun, you can place your decoy further away from your hunting position. The ideal place would be close to the edge of a field where trees and shrubs begin to thicken.
-
Step 3
Place your decoy in an area where other deer would expect to see deer. Location is one of the most important aspects of using a deer decoy.
-
Step 4
Position your deer decoy in a feeding stance. This position is the most reliable and effective stance for a deer decoy.
-
Step 5
Use a doe decoy during "rut" season for great decoy hunting results. Attach a small, neutral-colored rag to the tail and spray it with "doe-in-estrus," a scent resembling that of a doe in heat.
-
Step 6
Try using a buck archery target for a decoy. Be creative and come up with rattling and grunting sounds to attract challenging bucks and curious does.
-
Step 1
Remember that waterfowl take off and land into the wind. Keep this in mind when you set up your decoys, remembering to set the decoys in front of you while the wind blows from behind you.
-
Step 2
Leave plenty of room for waterfowl to land amidst your decoys. Don't clutter the area with too many decoys and not enough room for your targets to land.
-
Step 3
Use heron decoys, sleeping or feeding duck decoys or even swan decoys to create target confidence.
-
Step 4
Create a unique decoy spread by using variety when setting up your decoys. Give the birds something different to attract them to set their wings and create the target you need for a successful hunt.
-
Step 5
Use a variety of windsocks in your spread if you are setting up field decoys. This will make for a unique, interesting spread to attract fowl and create a more natural movement pattern.
