Things You'll Need:
- One-step gun-care spray
- Bore solvent
- Rifle-cleaning kit
- Gun oil
- Bore light
- Bore snake
-
Step 1
Use a one-step, total gun-care spray product, such as Prolix. Spray the barrel and the cylinder chambers to remove any fouling present. Allow the fluid to sit for a few minutes, and then wipe it away.
-
Step 2
Spray the action of the rifle as well and allow liquid to sit for a few minutes. Wipe down the action and remove any remaining liquid.
-
Step 3
Clean the barrel of your rifle using a bore snake instead of the traditional, time-consuming method of using patches. Spray the floss end of the bore snake with solvent and guide it through the barrel and out of the muzzle.
-
Step 4
Pull the bore snake through the barrel a second time to ensure complete cleaning. It is not necessary to apply more solvent when pulling the snake through a second time.
-
Step 5
Use a bore light to check the cleanliness of your hunting rifle barrel. Bore lights can be placed in the breech of your rifle to illuminate the barrel. This allows you to inspect the condition of your barrel.
-
Step 6
Use gun oil sparingly when lubricating your rifle. Unless you will be storing your rifle for a very long period of time, there is no need to lubricate your bore with gun oil. Use a tiny amount of gun oil when lubricating your rifle action, as too much oil can cause your action to gum.
-
Step 7
Remember that the more you shoot your hunting rifle and clean it, the more polished it will look. Regular rifle maintenance is an absolute must for safety while hunting, as well as for effective shooting.
