1
Find the problem. Nail problems are different and have different causes and cures so the first step is to diagnose the particular problem that you're having.

2
Know if you have brittle nails. Nails that are brittle have no flexibility and will break off easily, often in little pieces. This is usually caused by an iron deficiency which is solved with more greens or a multivitamin with iron. It can be a circulatory problem or a glitch in the endocrine system, both of which would require a doctor visit to treat.

Understand what causes dry nails. Dry nails are also brittle but they are caused by drying agents: detergents, cleaning agents, waterless hand cleaners and, most often, the dry days of winter. Combat dry nails with hand lotion on hands and nails. Using gloves to clean with and use gloves to warm your hands when outside in the cold will help.

Look for nail ridges. Horizontal ridges are called Beau's lines and these are caused by heredity or by severe stress. If you have vertical lines, the culprit is likely poor nutrition or a lack of iron in your diet. You can correct your diet and, of course, reduce the stressors in your life but until that's all taken care of, ridges can be masked with a good basecoat.
