People spend more money on travel expenses during the holidays than at any other time of the year. With a little patience, anyone can considerably reduce the cost of holiday travel. Cutting back on the cost allows you to relax and enjoy your holiday vacation.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Start planning your trip in the Spring, around April or May. The earlier you book hotels and air travel, the lower the cost. If you are visiting family, ask if you can stay with them to save money on hotel rooms.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether to fly or drive. Larger families may save money by driving instead of flying. If you are driving, carry a cooler with snacks and drinks to save money on the drive.

  3. Step 3

Budget the amount of money you can spend on the trip. Set funds aside for food, play, shopping, a rental car and gas.

  4. Step 4

Compare rates and look for special deals at online travel sites. Many airlines offer special rates for flights booked months in advance. If you plan to stay in a hotel, check for room rates and discounts. Many hotels allow children under 12 to stay for free. Some sites give discounts if you book a flight and hotel at the same time.

  5. Step 5

Stay at a hotel with a free breakfast. When you eat out, eat at inexpensive restaurants. Stay away from ordering room service.

  6. Step 6

Visit local areas that are free to the public, such as parks, historical sites and gardens.

  7. Step 7

Turn off your cell phone if you are in an area where roaming charges apply.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware of airport security regulations and pack accordingly. Check the Federal Aviation Administration website for a list of restricted or banned items.
  • Holidays are the busiest time to travel. Arrive 2 to 3 hours before your plane is scheduled to depart. If you are traveling with a pet, check hotel and airline regulations before bringing your furry friend along.
  • Don't spend money on things you can do at home.
