How to Dress When Attending a Seminary Graduation Ceremony (Male)

A seminary graduation is different from its secular counterpart. Prayers and speeches about God and his grace are a given. Those people receiving their degrees find work in the church, mission field and learning institutions. The seminarian is about to embark on doing God's work in the world, a humbling and honorable profession. Attire should reflect the celebratory occasion of the seminary.

  • Regalia
  • Dress shirt
  • Tie
  • Dark slacks
  • Suit
  • Sport coat
  • Dark socks
  • Dark dress shoes
  • Casual clothes
  • Tennis shoes

    For the Male Graduating Student

  1. Step 1

    Wear your regalia with proper attire underneath. Check with your student handbook for general advice.

  2. Step 2

    Put on a pressed dress shirt. White is always nice with a tie. However, other colors are suitable as well; just remember to coordinate the colors. Conservative is correct, nothing flashy.

  3. Step 3

    Get your dark slacks ready. Black, blue, gray or brown always look dressy.

  4. Step 4

    Dress in a suit or sport coat. This is not required under the regalia but is nice after you take it off.

  5. Step 5

    Find a pair of black or dark socks to wear with a pair of dress shoes. A dark color is preferred.

  6. Step 6

    Bring along some casual clothes. A change of dress is handy for parties or outside activities; shorts or jeans are acceptable in an appropriate setting.

  7. For Male Guest Attendees

  8. Step 1

    Choose nice clothing. Dress shirt and slacks are always nice attire for seminary graduation.

  9. Step 2

    Select a suit and tie or sport coat for the graduation ceremony. A coat and tie especially for certain types of banquets or parties. Some seminaries host an after graduation lunch or dinner and may request semi-formal attire.

  10. Step 3

    Clean your pair of nice dark dress shoes and wear dark socks.

  11. Step 4

    Pack a change of clothes. After the graduation a more informal gathering is a nice time to wear shorts or denims and tennis shoes, especially for a home celebration.
