Step 1
Start birding in Wisconsin at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Lake Superior off the Bayfield Peninsula. The area is home to over 240 bird species, making it the top Wisconsin birding site. See the spectacle of over 200,000 Canada Geese in the fall at Horicon Marsh. Nesting species include Bitterns, Cormorants, Herons, Pelicans, Rails and waterfowl. Some of the areas are restricted or closed to protect critical habitat. The Auto Tour Route and the hiking trails have the best bird watching.

Follow the Great Wisconsin Birding and Nature Trail. The Trail is a mapped auto trail which covers the entire state and allows bird watchers to experience some of Wisconsin's finest natural areas. There are detailed maps and species checklists for each of the areas along the Trail.

Enjoy Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The forest provides important nesting and breeding habitat for numerous species. During the summer months, more than 20 warbler species can be found in the area. Spruce Grouse, Boreal Chickadees, Gray Jays and many other interesting bird species can be found in Chequamegon.
