  • Bird watching guide
  • Spotting scope or binoculars
  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Notebook
  1. Step 1

Start birding in Utah in the area around the Great Salt Lake, since it is one of the best birding locations in North America. The Lake plays host to millions of waterfowl, shorebirds and ducks each migration season. There are many top wildlife refuges and management areas and parks around the Great Salt Lake. Just a few of the bird species in the area include American White Pelicans, Black Terns, Burrowing Owls, Soras, White-faced Ibis and Wilson's Phalaropes.

  2. Step 2

Go to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge near Brigham City. The Refuge protects the immense marshes at the mouth of the Bear River. The marshes are a haven for millions of migrating birds. The Refuge is designated as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network site. Migrating birds come to the area from both the Pacific and Central Flyways of North America.

  3. Step 3

Find the area along the Provo River area below the Jordanelle Dam and enjoy an internationally recognized Important Bird Area. This area offers year-round birding with songbirds and marsh birds most prevalent. Birders can enjoy the waterfowl above the dam as well.

  4. Step 4

Enjoy the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has a 10,000-acre marsh system which provides essential habitat for migrating wetland bird species. Visit the Refuge in mid-April or late September for the maximum enjoyment of migrating species.

  5. Step 5

Print maps, guides, checklists and directions for various bird watching sites. The resources listed with this article provide detailed and updated information on birding in Utah. Additional birding sites throughout Utah are listed on the websites.
