West Virginia allows big game hunting of bear, boar, deer and turkey. Hunting is allowed for a variety of migratory game birds and non-migratory species such as grouse, bobwhite and pheasant. The following steps will show how to obtain a hunting license for West Virginia.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Complete a hunter education course if you were born after Jan. 1, 1975. You do not need a hunting license if you are less than 15 years of age and hunt with a licensed adult, are over 65 with photo identification, a disabled veteran with an identification card or a military service member on leave with papers.

  2. Step 2

Determine the stamps you need. West Virginia uses a stamp system for additional permits. The fee schedule is available at the DNR website.

  3. Step 3

Apply for a resident license if you have lived in West Virginia for the past 30 days. You may also be an active duty member of the military who was a resident of West Virginia at the time you entered the service or a full-time college student in West Virginia.

  4. Step 4

Submit an application online at the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources (WVDNR) website. You will need an email address, a printer, a credit card and a valid driver's license or state ID. Select the licenses you need, complete the application process and pay the required fees including the transaction fee. Print out your licenses.

  5. Step 5

Fill out an application in person at a DNR office or license agent. The WVDNR website has a list with the ability to search by county.
