How to Get a Hunting License in South Dakota

South Dakota offers hunting on nearly 5 million acres throughout the year. The state has large game including antelope, bighorn sheep, deer, elk and mountain goat for hunting. The following steps will show you how to obtain a hunting license in South Dakota.

Instructions

    • 1

Complete a HuntSAFE course if you are older than 12 but less than 16 years of age. The class must be at least 10 hours long.

    • 2

Apply for a resident license if you have lived in South Dakota for the past 90 days, have a South Dakota driver's license, have registered your vehicles in South Dakota and do not claim residency in any other state. You also qualify as a resident if you are less than 18 and a legal dependent of a resident, a member of the United States Armed Forces stationed in South Dakota or attending college full-time in South Dakota.

Fill out an application online at the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks (SDGFP) website. Provide your driver's license number if you do not need to show any additional documentation. You must be a United States or Canadian citizen, over 16 years of age, have a social security number and a printer. Complete the application and pay the required fees, including a transaction fee. Print your license.

Submit an application in person with the nearest storefront agent if you need to show some other form of documentation. This includes military personnel or college students applying for a residence license and non-US/Canadian citizens. You can get a list of locations from the SDGFP website.
