How to Get a Hunting License in New York

New York State is 85 percent privately owned and this is where most hunting takes place. Wildlife management areas and some parks permit hunting. The sport is tightly regulated by the Department of Environmental Conservation in New York. The following steps will show how to obtain a hunting license in New York.

      Complete an approved hunter education course if you have not previously held a hunting license. The course is at least 10 hours long and you must be at least 11 years old.

      Live in New York for the past 30 days to qualify for a resident license. If you are under 18, your parents' residence is your residence. Members of the United States Armed Forces and full-time college students in New York are also considered residents.

      Apply at any hunting license outlet or the Department of Economic Conservation (DEC) Regional Office 1. Bring your driver's license, a copy of your hunting certificate and the permit fees with you. You must apply in person and be accompanied by a parent or guardian if you are under 16.
