Step 1
Prune the excess. Before arranging your roses in a vase, begin by removing all the leaves that would end up submerged below the water line. Leaving leaves on the stem and under water encourages bacteria to grow.
-
Step 2
Trim an inch. Using a knife or shears, carefully cut an inch from the bottom of the stem at an angle. Make the cuts under water so that the stems can draw in water, not air.
-
Step 3
Place in a vase. When scouting about the house for the perfect vase for your roses, make sure the one you pick is very deep. Fill the vase with warm water, arrange the roses, and add in the floral preservative that came in the box.
-
Step 4
Keep your roses fresh. Each day, you should add warm water to the vase in order to keep your vase full.
-
Step 5
Stretch out the life of the roses. If you want your roses to last more than one week, you should repeat the above steps every three days. Every time you change the water, wash the vase with hot water.
-
Step 6
Use your creativity. It shouldn't be difficult to come up with an arrangement that you love. All the principles that you learned even in preschool can help you as you tap into three design elements: color, line and size. Most of all, go with what speaks to you and what is pleasing to your eye.

Step 7
Pick a spot in your home to display your roses. The place you display your vase should be in a cool area of the house that is free of drafts and not in direct sunlight. Also be sure to keep the vase away from heat sources such as appliances and heating vents.
