How to Be Nice to Others

We interact with people every day and every time we make contact with someone we have the chance to make their day better. It is not always easy to be nice to others, but the benefit to those around you and to yourself is well worth it.

      Feel good about yourself. You cannot be nice to others without respecting yourself. One of the key tenets of being kind to others is to treat others as you want them to treat you. If you do not respect yourself, you will struggle to treat others with kindness.

      Give everyone your undivided attention. The most important aspect of being nice is to give them your time and attention when they are around you. Everyone has been ignored and knows the feeling of not being considered important. When you have the opportunity to give someone your attention it is a great opportunity to be nice.

      Put yourself in another's position. Whenever dealing with someone, consider the situation from their point of view. When you try to understand what someone else is going through and it will be easier for you to be nice to them. This is the premise of the golden rule which is an important belief in many different cultures.

      Give everyone the benefit of the doubt. Many people are quick to think the worst of others. Do not assume that someone is doing what they are doing to deliberately to hurt you. Many times the person that offended you has no idea that they hurt your feelings. By believing that others are not purposely looking for ways to wrong you, it will make it much easier for you to be nice to others.

      Prevent your mood from impacting how you treat others. When you are upset or angry it is difficult to be nice to others. You need to recognize when you are in a bad mood and work to keep that mood from affecting how you treat others.

      Act on your thoughts and ideas. When you feel the urge to say something nice or to do something for someone, do it. Often times when you do not act on the opportunity to be nice to others, you will not get another chance.

  • Once you start trying to be nice to others, it will get easier and easier. Being nice to others will become a habit.
