Step 1
Learn what a wine consultant is and does. Not to be confused with a Sommelier, a wine consultant is someone with an extensive array of wine knowledge, yet may or may not hold a level of mastery. A wine consultant can often work for himself, whereas a Sommelier works for a restaurant or resort.
-
Step 2
Decide if you would like to specialize in one area of wine (such as reds or whites, dry wines or regions of the world, or French wines for example) or if you will acquire a large amount of knowledge about all wines in general.
-
Step 3
Explore the ways to gain this knowledge. Many colleges and universities offer wine appreciation classes as part of their culinary and hospitality programs as well as in their community education programs.
-
Step 4
Explore how you will use your wine knowledge. You could work in a five star restaurant or start your own wine consultant business. You could offer private wine tasting parties, consultations for weddings or other celebrations or help new restaurants select a wine list.
