How to Become a Wine Consultant

Wine may seem simple in the vast choices of spirits, but it is quite complicated. Its flavor comes from the land the grapes were grown in with special ingredients thrown in by each vineyard. Add to that the sacred aging process that allows fermentation. Wine can enhance or downplay any meal without even being on the plate. Use these steps to learn how to study wine and become a wine consultant.

    Instructions

      • 1

Learn what a wine consultant is and does. Not to be confused with a Sommelier, a wine consultant is someone with an extensive array of wine knowledge, yet may or may not hold a level of mastery. A wine consultant can often work for himself, whereas a Sommelier works for a restaurant or resort.

      • 2

Decide if you would like to specialize in one area of wine (such as reds or whites, dry wines or regions of the world, or French wines for example) or if you will acquire a large amount of knowledge about all wines in general.

      • 3

Explore the ways to gain this knowledge. Many colleges and universities offer wine appreciation classes as part of their culinary and hospitality programs as well as in their community education programs.

      • 4

Explore how you will use your wine knowledge. You could work in a five star restaurant or start your own wine consultant business. You could offer private wine tasting parties, consultations for weddings or other celebrations or help new restaurants select a wine list.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Become versed in wine terminology and use it wisely. You do not want to appear condescending or snotty to any of your clients.

    • Be sure to check out the requirements if you plan to sell wine to individuals or businesses. You may be required to carry a liquor license in your state.

    • Avoid minors or even allowing them to be in the house while an individual is hosting a wine tasting party. Encourage clients to find alternate arrangements for their children the day of the party.
