Step 1
Make sure to train the lower body. Most do not realize it but the ability to shoot a basketball from far distances comes from the legs. Any activity from weight lifting to swimming will strengthen those legs. Just make sure the legs are in shape, specifically the quadriceps and calve muscles.

Step 2
Use the backboard. When a person takes a shot from half court in basketball if they shoot at the rim it makes it an infinitely more difficult shot. First the backboard absorbs some of the initial velocity which in a straight rim shot makes the ball bounce off the rim more readily. Second a shooter has more room for error on the backboard because it is directly behind the rim and makes the angle less acute for the ball to go in.

Step 3
Get a moving start to the line. Use this movement to help decrease the distance the shooter needs to propel by their motion. When at the half court line shoot the basketball off one foot. The foot that is planted should be the shooting foot. So if the shooter is right-handed then shoot off the right foot and vice versa.

Step 4
Place the shooting hand underneath the basketball and the other hand on the side of the basketball when shooting a half court shot. Some make the mistake of placing the hands on each side of the ball. This mistake drastically reduces the ability to guide the ball.

Step 5
Take the shot directly in front of the basket. Some shooter start to take the half court slightly off-angle. This makes it harder to make the shot because being off center from the hoop creates a more difficult angle.
