How to Be a World War II Buff

History can be very fascinating and no aspect is as exciting as war. World War II was the most widespread and violent of wars. Many people are very interested on a personal level in World War II. If you would like to be a World War II buff, follow these steps.

        Know the primary actors. World War II buffs know that it was a war of aggression and expansion from primarily three countries. Germany, Italy and Japan were the aggressors who sought to expand their possessions.

        Grasp the hatred of Fascism. Germany and Italy were both under the control of leaders who came to power by suppressing minorities and stirring up hatred in their countries.

        Understand the two theaters of conflict. There was a European theater where Germany and Italy were active, which includes northern Africa where both countries sought to increase their possessions. The other theater was the Pacific theater where Japan sought to control the entire Pacific Ocean from Australia to Hawaii to Alaska and part of the Asian mainland.

        Appreciate the technology. World War I was a war where defensive weapons were vastly superior to offensive weapons and hundreds of thousands were killed as armies continuously fought over the same small amount of territory. World War II buffs acknowledge that it was a war of tanks, bombers, fighters, air craft carriers, submarines and even rockets. Germany was able to overwhelm France quickly and the battle lines varied greatly during the course of the war.

        Consider the scientific advances. World War II saw the perfecting of inventions such as radar, jet propulsion and of course the splitting of the atom. Discoveries made during this time also paved the way for the space age.

        Resolution resulted in more international strife. The end of World War II ushered in the Cold War conflict between the Communist block and the Western world.

        Learn all you can. In order to be a World War II buff, you must be able to talk intelligently about a wide range of topics with other World War II buffs. Be able to competently discuss the major periods and campaigns. You do not need to be an expert, but know a few facts that other buffs will not know.
