Two decades ago you couldn't become a home office designer. These days it's a lucrative niche. Many entrepreneurs who are working out of their home made their reputation at larger companies. They appreciate a productive workspace and they've got the money to spend. The following steps will help you tap into this market.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Work on your decorating sense. Notice the use of space, lighting, decor, colors and other design elements everywhere you go. Look through interior design magazines for samples.

  2. Step 2

Get a Bachelor's degree in interior design. You'll need it to get an internship, certification and professional association membership. Expect to take courses in computer-aided design (CAD), use of space, colors, fabrics, furniture, architecture and ergonomics.

  3. Step 3

Apprentice with an experienced designer in a design or architectural company. You can also create displays in furniture stores. Check out the Experience Program with the National Council for Interior Design Qualification's (NCIDQ).

  4. Step 4

Take the NCIDQ license exam after a couple of years of experience. It's not required in all 50 states but will give you credibility when you go out on your own.

  5. Step 5

Create a marketing plan to introduce your services to work-at-home entrepreneurs. Offer useful articles and tips on your website to rank high on search engines.

  6. Step 6

Network with other interior designers. The American Society of Interior Designers offers members publications, events, a job bank and referral services.

  7. Step 7

Continue your education with seminars and workshops in architecture, engineering, building codes and CAD. Offer clients innovations in home office design inspired by your education.
