Things You'll Need:
- Skis
- Skiing skills
- Certifications or education
-
Step 1
Learn how to ski. You must be a proficient skier in order to become an instructor of skiing. If you don't already know how to ski, take lessons. If you have some skiing experience but need to brush up on your skills, take lessons. If you're pretty good and think you can teach others what you know, move on to the next step.
-
Step 2
Get certified. There are three areas in which you can become certified as a ski instructor: Adaptive, Alpine and Nordic. To make sure you're qualified should a ski instructor position become available, you might want to become certified in all three areas. Find out the standards and various levels for each area and study them. Take any required written or physical tests and pass them to become officially certified as a ski instructor.
-
Step 3
Find a job. Check out newspaper want ads, online want ads, Internet listings and other publications for available positions throughout the country (or the world) as a ski instructor. Many times, right at the onset of the winter season and just before the first snow, ski lodges and ski schools are actively looking for instructors to hire. Submit your resume to as many employers as possible, making sure you include all of your skiing experience, teaching experience and certifications.
-
Step 4
Stay current. Make sure that you regularly check the certification requirements as well as any new instructional suggestions that will keep you employable. Employers want to please their clients, so staying certified and current with skiing trends will help you not only keep your job, but find an new one when the new season comes around.
