How to Upload News Video Clips From a Website

By Michael Dance

You don't have to search very hard these days to find video clips online. With YouTube and its competitors streaming millions of videos a day and all the big news websites posting articles in video format, it's easy to find great content. But since it's the web, availability isn't the only plus: You're also able to share videos, with friends or on your own site, with only a few clicks of your mouse.

Browse the web until you find the news clip you want to use.

Search for an "embed" button on the video player that's showing the video. You may have to click some of the smaller buttons at the bottom of the video to see what they do. If a snippet of code appears, just select it all, copy it and skip to Step 7.

Attempt to isolate the video on its own page in the event Step 2 fails. Sometimes videos have direct links specified that take you to a blank page with just the video. When the video is as isolated as possible, select "View" from the menu at top of your browser, and then select "Source." The underlying HTML code of the video's webpage should pop up in its own window. Scroll through the code and try to spot a URL for a video file. The URL should end with a video file extension, such as ".wmv," ".mov," or ".flv." If you find the code, select and copy it.

Paste the URL into your address bar and press "enter." If a download box comes up, download the file. If the video starts playing, click on the "File" menu and then select "Save As..." to download it.

Go to YouTube and click on the yellow "Upload" button at the top of the screen. You may be prompted to create an account if you don't already have one. Follow the instructions; when it asks you to browse for the video you'd like to upload, select the video you just downloaded. Note that if the video contains copyrighted material, uploading it is illegal and not condoned.

Go to the "My Videos" section of your account once the video finishes uploading, select the video. You'll be taken to the video page where it will start playing. Click the code in the box next to "embed" and copy it.

Edit a page on your website and paste the embedded code where you'd like the video to appear. Save the page, and navigate to it on a browser to see how it looks.
