How to Change a Honda Cabin Filter
The cabin filter in your Honda automobile cleans all of the air that comes in through your ventilation system. If not changed on a regular basis, dirt and debris can cause reduced air flow, mold and nasty smells.
Things You'll Need
- Replacement filter
- Phillips head screwdriver
- ¼ inch drive 10mm socket
- ¼ inch drive ratchet
- ¼ inch drive extension
- Small flat head screwdriver

1
Open the passenger side front door and remove the small triangular panel on the side of the dash. Unscrew the three Phillips head screws behind the panel.
-
2
Pull open the glove box and remove the plastic stoppers located at the back on each side. Press in on the outside of the stopper, towards the interior of the glove box; you'll feel a pop and the stoppers will come free. Close the glove box.

3
Start from the passenger side of the dash and pull the trim panel back, working your way towards the center console; the left side will not come out, so don't break it. Leave the panel pulled out from the dash.
-
4
Unscrew the Phillips head screws and the 10mm bolts from the metal support bar. Remove the bar by lifting up on one end and then the other.
-
5
Remove the glove box from the dash. Open the glove box and pull it towards you, though some models like the 2000 Accords require pulling the glove box up, then towards you.
-
6
Find the removable access door on the air box and remove it. This door should be relatively narrow, with a tab on the top and a hinge on the bottom. Pull up on the tab and the access will swing forward and come off.
-
7
Remove the old cabin filter. Some models like the Civic and CR-V have two small filters while Odysseys and Pilots will have a single, large filter. Remove any debris from the interior of the air box while you have the filter out.
-
8
Put the new cabin filter in and replace all panels, screws and bolts in the reverse order that they were taken out.

Tips & Warnings
A small, flat head screwdriver will help with prying some of the stubborn trim panels loose; wrap some electrical tape or similar tape around the head the help prevent scratching the trim.
Your local Honda dealer can do all of this for you, but they'll charge you around $100 to do it.
Some models, notably 2005 Civics only require the glove box to be removed, while Odysseys and Pilots have a plastic support bar which must be cut out of the vehicle.
Be careful when working the lower trim panel out. This panel is thin and easily broken, so take your time.
