Finding buried treasure--who hasn't had this dream? A metal detector is the tool you need if you want to begin the search for hidden treasures in your yard, at the beach or in a local park.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Determine the amount of money you want to spend. Metal detector quality is closely tied to cost. Detecting for profit requires a higher quality detector.
Step2
Think realistically about how you will use your detector. Detecting on sandy beaches or in or near water all require special qualities in a detector. Some models are multi-purpose, but a model built for specific conditions works best.
Step3
Find local metal detector dealers in the phone book. If you cannot find a dealer locally you can buy on the Internet.
Step4
Visit the dealer, try out the detectors and ask questions. If you must buy on the Internet, research the models you are considering before making a decision.
Step5
Locate a community detecting club. Members can be a great resource of information and can tell you where to buy or sell used detectors.
Step6
Check the warranty. Good metal detectors have a two-year warranty and high-end detectors up to a five-year one.

Tips & Warnings

  • Many people buy expensive detectors, then find they really don't enjoy detecting or don't have the time for it. Consider used detectors, as they can be a smart choice.
  • Search for local detecting clubs on the Internet or call a local college or university science department.
  • Knowing where you will detect is important when deciding what detector to buy. Do your research. Call your local historical society to find out if your area has old towns, battlegrounds or other places that may yield treasure. If you live near a beach, finding jewelry and coins in the water is a sure bet.
