4. Visit the dealer, try out the detectors and ask questions. If you must buy on the Internet, research the models you are considering before making a decision.
5. Locate a community detecting club. Members can be a great resource of information and can tell you where to buy or sell used detectors.
6. Check the warranty. Good metal detectors have a two-year warranty and high-end detectors up to a five-year one.

• Many people buy expensive detectors, then find they really don't enjoy detecting or don't have the time for it. Consider used detectors, as they can be a smart choice.
