It seems nobody likes Wal-Mart, but almost everybody shops there. All we hear is how the big-box giant destroys local small businesses and has horrible working conditions. Still, very few people can avoid the low prices. But there may be ways you can avoid the corporate giant of Wal-Mart without increasing your shopping expenses too much.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Shop at other discount stores. The prices at other mass retailers are often just a few cents more than Wal-Mart. Even on an annual basis, it really won't cost you that much more.

  2. Step 2

Shop at dollar stores. Some dollar chains may have more name-brand products than you'd think if that's what you insist on.

  3. Step 3

Look for coupons and specials as often as possible. Even convenience stores may occasionally offer discounts that rival Wal-Mart's everyday prices. Take advantage of these specials whenever you can.

  4. Step 4

See what bargains are available at local supermarkets. Check if they have any frequent shopper memberships that include discounts. They may be as simple as just filling out an application.

  5. Step 5

Give the smaller stores in your area a chance. At the very least, you'll probably get more personable service there. And you never know just what their prices are like until you try.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ultimately, you may need to make a decision between your beliefs and your pocketbook. How much more are you willing to pay shopping somewhere other than Wal-Mart to know you're supporting your local economy more and trying to bring down a corporate giant?
  • Keep this in mind--any store that offers extra-low prices to the customers is likely doing so at the expense of someone else. Wal-Mart isn't alone in these practices. They're picked on more just because they're the biggest.
