Hanukkah is a Jewish celebration of the Festival of Lights. During Hanukkah, families gather to celebrate with special foods, games, and traditions to honor leader Judah Maccabee leading his men to victory over the Greek rulers who had ruled the Jews for more than 150 years.

    Decorating With Menorahs

  1. Step 1

Choose a menorah for your home that will signify the Festival of Lights. Traditional menorahs hold nine candles, with the middle candle always lit first and used to light the eight other candles on successive nights of the Festival.

  2. Step 2

Decide whether you want traditional white or yellow candles to light your menorah or more festive, colorful candles.

  3. Step 3

Place your menorah preferably outside your home and on the left side of your entrance, or if that's not possible, inside the home shining in a window that faces the street.

  4. Step 4

Light the candles at nightfall, and allow them to burn for at least 30 minutes. Modern Hanukkah candles will burn for exactly that length of time.

  5. Star of David

  6. Step 1

Use the six-pointed Star of David as another remembrance. You can find the star printed on paper goods, candles or garland, or you can make your own.

  7. Step 2

Make a window ornament of the Star of David to reflect the light from the menorah. The Billy Bear 4 Kids website has instructions to make this Hanukkah craft.

  8. Step 3

Make a festive table covering for Hanukkah by painting the Star of David in silver on a blue tablecloth or sheet.

  9. Other Decorating Ideas

  10. Step 1

Use the dreidel as a fun decoration as well as a game. You can hang a dreidel from a doorway or the ceiling or cut out the dreidel shape for table confetti.

  11. Step 2

Scatter pieces of gelt (traditional chocolate money) to create a festive tabletop. You can also attach pieces of the candy to seating cards or wrap with clear or blue cellophane and embellish with a fancy ribbon.

  12. Step 3

Purchase or make a Hanukkah wreath in the traditional blue and silver with ribbons and painted pine cones.
