If your favorite college team is playing in the Rose Bowl, but you can't make it to Pasadena, then throw a Rose Bowl Party. Watching the "granddaddy of all bowl games" from the comfort of your home, surrounded by like-minded football enthusiasts, is a great way to spend New Year's Day. And with any luck, you'll be able to celebrate the history of the Tournament of Roses and your team's victory as well.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Invitations
  • Rose stickers
  • Wooden dowels
  • Crêpe streamers
  • Football-shaped balloons
  • Table covers
  • Silk roses
  • Vases
  • Football shaped bowls
  • Themed prizes
  • Multiple televisions
  1. Step 1

Send party invitations well in advance to help ensure guests will save the date. Cover the envelope with rose stickers and substitute your name in the address block with the name of one of the teams.

  2. Step 2

Drive wooden dowels into the ground every few feet along the walkway leading up to the door. Then run crepe streamers, in your team colors along the walk wrapping around each dowel for support. Attach helium filled football-shaped mylar balloons to each dowel.

  3. Step 3

Cover your serving table in your team colors and use a vase of red silk roses as your centerpiece. Tie a helium-filled football balloon to the vase and add a football-shaped bowl filled with snacks.

  4. Step 4

Record the Tournament of Roses parade earlier in the day and have it playing on the television as guests arrive. Turn it off a half hour or so before the Rose Bowl game begins so guests can catch the pre-game commentary.

  5. Step 5

Make a 100-square grid on a piece of paper. Write one team name across the top and the other along the left side. Have your guests write their names on an equal number of random squares. Then draw numbers zero through nine out of a hat and assign a number to each row and column. Every quarter, take the last digit of each team's score and map it to a square on the grid. Award a Rose Bowl theme prize to the person assigned that square.

  6. Step 6

Set up multiple televisions to view the game. If possible, set one in every room your guests will have access to so no one misses a big play. It also helps spread the crowd out so everyone is comfortable.

Tips & Warnings
  • Fresh roses can also be used as a centerpiece if you don't mind the added expense.
