Step 1
Gather all your materials and equipment. Airbrush makeup requires a good amount of gear such as an air compressor, the makeup, a mask and the airbrush itself. Assemble all the different pieces of equipment in a place where you can cover exposed surfaces so they don't get damaged by the makeup.
-
Step 2
Ask someone for help. You should have someone else apply airbrush makeup to your face. It's important that your eyes stay closed when the makeup is sprayed onto your face so you don't injure yourself, so ask someone to help you out with the process.
-
Step 3
Follow the makeup company's guides and tutorials carefully. While all the materials used for airbrush makeup are FDA approved, it is essential that you follow the makeup company's instructions so you use the product safely and effectively. Most airbrush kits come with a book, CD or DVD so be sure to refer to these instructional materials before you start.
-
Step 4
Make a plan. Using airbrush makeup is similar to painting a portrait; it's important to plan what you will be doing in advance. You can practice mixing colors and layers on paper (though the texture is significantly different from skin) so you have an idea of how to apply the makeup.
-
Step 5
Work in layers. Begin with a base layer of makeup and let it dry. Remember that unlike regular makeup, you can add layer upon layer without producing smudging or smearing. Let each successive layer dry for a minute or two before adding the next one.
-
Step 6
Apply the makeup conservatively. It's very easy to add more color while it's impossible to take away color if you put too much. Begin conservatively, holding the airbrush at least six inches from the skin. Use controlled bursts to spray the areas you want.
