The American Mountain Lion or, Cougar is a very rare and special animal. Its pelts and skins are of great value. The Navajo Indians of the Colorado Plateau teach that a quiver made from Mountain Lion Skin will protect the bearer. They also teach that it is wrong to hunt a mountain lion except out of necessity. If you do have a mountain lion carcass, here's how you skin it.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Skinning knife
  • Razor
  1. Step 1

Lay the cat on its back. Start a cut over the breast bone, just about even with the front armpits. Cut a straight line down around the sex organ. Cut a long slit down the tail and peel this free like a banana.

  2. Step 2

Grab a leg; start peeling the pelt in the direction of the spine as far you can it get it. Push the paw towards the chest. Grab the skin where you made your original cut. Pull that flap towards the leg while pushing the paw towards the cut. Doing this should turn the leg skin inside out as it peels off of the leg. Keep peeling until you get to the ankle, once the skin is off of the ankle cut through the ankle to free the skin from the leg. Peel the skin back to the spine.

  3. Step 3

Work your way around the mountain lion until all of the legs are skinned. It should be relatively easy, now, to start at the tail and pull the cat-skin off of the spine. Go slow to avoid tearing.

  4. Step 4

Go back to the neck. Start rolling the skin off of the skull. Grab the skin tightly; don't let any slack get in it as you slowly work towards the nose.

  5. Step 5

Use caution at the rear of the skull, as this is where the ear butts are. Make a couple of deep cuts through the cartilage at the base of the ears. Free the ears and keep peeling towards the eyes. There is a membrane at the at the back of the eye, cut this carefully. With equal care, free the skin around the eye, once the eye-holes are free work the skin down to the nose. When you get to the cartilage behind the nose cut through it.

  6. Step 6

Use a razor, and cut along the gums right below where you can see the teeth start to come through the gum line. With the face and head skin already peeled down, you'll need to start at the back of the lower jaw and push your knife up through the cut you just made. Separate the lip from the jaw by working, slowly, forward. Continue pulling the pelt towards the chin until it's free from the corpse.

Tips & Warnings
  • A razor or box knife works well for detail work around the eyes and lips.
