Coyotes are hunted to protect game and livestock populations, for pelts and for sport. In many areas coyotes are abundant, sometimes to the point of excess. High populations contribute to their reputation as pests. Coyotes give hunters a target during the off-season and a small amount of income if the pelts are sold. Read on to learn more.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go on a pre-hunt to look for clearings you can call coyotes toward. Ask for permission to hunt on private land while you are scouting. Many landowners will see your offer to hunt coyotes as a favor. A generous rancher may return the favor by inviting you to hunt more desirable game during the appropriate season.

  2. Step 2

Search for signs of coyotes once you have permission to hunt on the land. Look for tracks, droppings and carcasses.

  3. Step 3

Prepare for your hunt by dressing in full camouflage which is necessary because coyotes have excellent vision. It is advisable to use cover scents to prevent coyotes from detecting your odor.

  4. Step 4

Call in coyotes using imitations of the small game animals that they hunt. For example, you can use a turkey call to imitate the sounds made by injured rabbits.

  5. Step 5

Howl to draw coyotes in for a social interaction. This requires practice to understand the meanings of different calls.

  6. Step 6

Aim and fire. Rifles or shotguns can be used to hunt coyotes.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan to sell the coyote pelts, take extra care to prepare them so you can earn a higher price. Pelt prices vary drastically based on condition and coloration.
  • Nuisance coyotes can also be trapped.
  • Many coyote hunters avoid eating the meat.
