How to Build Pens for Ducks

Ducks may not be traditional pets; but many people raise them right in their own backyards. You don't need to live on a farm or have lots of land; but wherever you choose to raise your ducks, build a pen for them to provide safety and comfort. Read on to learn more.

1. Find a place for your duck pen that is far enough away from your house to avoid any unpleasant drafts coming in. Make sure the area is large enough to accommodate the number of ducks you have and ensure there is enough shade and shelter to protect the ducks from harsh weather.
2. Plan to raise the floor of the pen a few inches so the floor stays dry if you live in a particularly wet climate. Wetness promotes fungus and ducks are prone to fungal problems. If you choose a wooden floor, simply place blocks around the edges and through the middle for support to raise the floor. If you live in a drier area, make sure the bedding can be changed easily so wetness isn't a problem.
3. Dig the wire sides into the ground all around the base when you build the pen to prevent predators from tunneling through. The fencing should go in at an angle and if possible be secured in several spots to prevent animals from stretching the holes out and sliding their bodies through.
4. Build a roof that will allow the rain to roll away from the duck pen and provide protection from predators. A wire roof is not sufficient but some type is absolutely needed because many animals can jump high or birds can swoop down and grab smaller ducks. An angled roof is best and should be secured with wire to the fencing every few inches to prevent predators from trying to squeeze through.
5. Add items for the ducks to hide in, under or behind when you build the pen. Like all animals, ducks will experience fear or other feelings that make them want to hide, and having someplace to do so will greatly reduce stress on the birds. Bushes are nice; but other objects that are not easily overturned and weatherproof are also good.
