Be a PTA President

Once elected as president of your child's school's PTA, it's time to get to work. You know the staff, you know the families and you know the school's policies inside and out. As a PTA president, you're not a rookie, but you need to find the best ways to put your experience and knowledge to work to better your school. Read on to learn how.

Instructions

    • 1

Follow the charter. Most PTAs or family councils have an established charter or constitution. This document is in place for a reason and should be followed. If your first order of business to is to establish committees, then do it. If you're supposed to throw a welcome back party, start planning.

    • 2

Take stock. The president should be privy to information available from past years. Review prior event attendance and make adjustments. Ensure that there is enough money to operate throughout the year, or add a fundraiser. Take a look at your volunteer roster, and start recruiting if necessary.

    • 3

Make yourself known and get to know others. One of your first untapped resources are the incoming kindergarten parents. Introduce yourself as soon as you can. Let them know that you are looking forward to their help and support. Personally invite them to the next event. Likewise, parents who were not involved in past years may just need some personal encouragement.

    • 4

Walk the walk. Adhere to your organization's values. As the leader, project a positive image and avoid gossip and complaints. Work to make the school and group a positive environment for all children.

Tips & Warnings

  • Being President doesn't mean that you need to be involved in every committee and event. Trust your fellow volunteers and avoid burnout.

  • Don't be afraid to change your organization's charter or constitution if it isn't working. This is usually a simple matter of votes.

I am new to the PTA> The current president has ben there over 10 years and is not welcoming to new parents. ALL of her friends are in other postions , such as treasurer etc. The average attendence by parents at the meetings is 10. This includes the president and other sworn in memebers and two teachers. That leaves a few parents. The president I have reason to believe is pocketing PTA money and ising the PTA for her personal gain. For instance she and the treasurer have sam's club cards which were paid for by the PTAwhich I believe they use for personal use. They also take home big decorations and use them for their homes . For example at the hallowen dance they had hundreds of dolars of decorations paid for by the PTA and took them home to decorate their homes. In addition, they allocated money for one event and then use the leftover food for the next but count that as money ...
