Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Crochet hook
  • Yarn
  • Pattern
  1. Step 1

Learn to crochet. A crochet hook and yarn are the tools needed to crochet. You learn the stitches used in crochet by buying a book, using a free website or finding a teacher. Most people find that it is easier to learn if you have someone show you the way to do each stitch. Check with your local craft store for supplies. While you are there, ask if they can refer a teacher or if they have an area where people post information regarding crochet.

  2. Step 2

Choose a pattern for the booties. There are many patterns available. Free patterns can be found online at crochet websites like Crochet Pattern Central. You need to know the abbreviations and the stitches that are used in crochet in order to use most free patterns. You can also buy patterns for baby booties from a local craft supplier.

  3. Step 3

Pick the yarn for the booties. How much yarn you need and how many colors you use will depend on the pattern you choose. You need to choose a yarn that is soft against the skin. Also keep in mind the sex of the baby and any special color themes that are going to be used in the nursery and in dressing the baby if you are making a pair as a gift for a baby.

  4. Step 4

Crochet the booties. You need to follow the pattern and use the proper stitches to create the booties. If you have problems, ask questions online in a crochet forum like the one used by Knitter's Review.

  5. Step 5

Include instructions with the booties. You need to let the person know what size the booties are and what they need to do to take care of the booties. Some yarns will shrink if they are washed in hot water. Other yarns may not be color safe and need to be washed with a set group of colors. Also let the person know if you have washed the booties already or if they should wash them before wearing them.
