An art gallery can be an inspiring place for kids. Even kids who don't like to draw can find things in an art gallery that they love. Sculpture, photography and kid friendly exhibits are all reasons to go. With the right approach and preparation a day at the art gallery is a day for fun. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Stroller or wagon for small children
  • Kid friendly exhibits
  • Books about artists
  • A map of the gallery

Step1
Look for art galleries that offer special exhibits or program just for kids. Kid friendly displays and hands on activities will help the day be memorable.
Step2
Check out books from your local library on the artists work you will see the day you go. Seeing small pictures in a book and then seeing the real thing on a wall can be exciting.
Step3
Learn something about the artists before your visit. Many artists have small trademarks in each of their works. Trying to spot these little messages is a fun activity.
Step4
Watch for clues about history in the paintings or drawings you're viewing. Certain time periods have certain distinct features and kids can get a mini history lesson without knowing it.
Step5
Talk about proper behavior in an art gallery. Grown-ups like to go to art galleries for their quiet, peaceful atmosphere. Art students study paintings and other things at art galleries. Emphasize quiet voices and no running.
Step6
Encourage children to take their time and look at things slowly. This can be a challenge in our electronic age where everything is instant. Use the gallery to teach your kids the value of slowing down for a closer look.
Step7
Plan your day around nap and lunch time and be considerate of when your kids have had enough. A little taste of an art gallery is a good way to begin.

Tips & Warnings

  • Choose one or two artists to view before you go. This will help kids not to be overwhelmed. Art galleries tend to be large places, and if you try to see too much they won't have good memories of the experience.
  • Know something about the art, artists and other aspects of the gallery before you go. You'll make a much better tour guide for your kids.
