Select "Customize" in the sub-menu under "Tools" on the top menu bar. A pop-up menu will appear with various labeled tabs.

Press the "Toolbar" tab to change the default toolbars that are displayed at the top menu bar. "Standard" and "Formatting" are the basic ones that should be displayed, containing your "File," "Edit," "View," and "Format" short-cuts. "Drawing" will appear by default at the bottom of the screen and has useful items like font color, lines, and auto-shapes.

Change the individual short-cuts on your toolbars under the "Commands" tab. As you scroll through the different toolbars, drag-and-drop the specific commands that you use onto the toolbar area at the top of your screen. Any specific commands that you don't use can be dragged back to the pop-up "Customize" window and they will no longer appear on your screen unless you later re-add them.

Place check marks in the boxes under the "Options" tab. You can choose how menus on the main menu bar are displayed, all at once or only the most used. A useful option is to have the font names displayed in the actual font, so you can see what the text will look like in your document. Keyboard shortcuts can also be viewed and changed in this area.
