Step 1
Purchase the program if you are fortunate enough to go to a professional baseball game. These programs list the player's names, numbers, stats, and positions. Everything you need to know and more about each player on the home team roster. Many programs also carry a brief description of the visitor's roster.
-
Step 2
Read up on the players in your program in between innings and before the game. This helps familiarize yourself with who plays what position and what their strengths and weaknesses are. Follow a couple players in each game and you will get to know the team in just a few weeks.
-
Step 3
Learn the basics of the game by reading up on the rules, and basic objective. Batters try to hit the ball the pitcher throws. If he gets 3 strikes he is out. He if gets 4 balls the batter is now on first base, and is now called the runner. His objective now is to get back to touch home plate without being tagged out and before his team gets 3 outs. 3 outs and it is the other teams turn to bat.
-
Step 4
Watch other fans in the stadium for their reactions and you can tell if the play was good for the team or not.
-
Step 5
Listen to the announcers on the radio while watching the game. You will hear what they see and that you may have missed in play by play action. This helps you understand what is going on when you may be clueless.
-
Step 6
Buy your snacks and souvenirs before the game or quickly in between innings so that you don't miss any of the action. You can also make a quick run to the concession stand if one of the teams is switching the pitcher.
-
Step 7
Stay for the whole game no matter what the score is. The people that left the game when Boston beat the Yankees in extra innings during the World Series will never forgive themselves for trying to beat the traffic.
-
Step 8
Be patient. The game has been played for decades, and it will take more than watching a few games to learn all the rules and procedures.
