Step1
Make it fun. Play games that involve movement. Get the basketball and shoot some hoops. Jump rope or play catch with a Frisbee. For younger kids, play a game of tag or run around the yard with the family dog. It's pretty simple--if an activity gets your kids moving and they enjoy it, then it's a great way to exercise.
Step2
Tailor your approach to the child's age. It's pointless to lecture on and on about the health benefits of exercise if you're talking to a seven year old. On the other hand, teenagers might be interested in learning more about how exercise affects their bodies.
Step3
Establish a regular schedule for exercise. Kids usually respond well to a structured routine because they know what to expect. However, you should vary the fitness activities you do together. It will fend off boredom and give your child a chance to work different body parts and muscles.
Step4
Take advantage of video games that require movement. There are games that involve dancing, boxing, kick boxing and more. These types of games are great tools if your child is a video game junkie.
Step5
Be a good role model for your child. No matter what you tell them, kids learn by watching what you do. If you make fitness a priority in your life, they will learn to make it a priority in theirs.
