Autumn is a wonderful season. It brings cool temperatures, low humidity--and leaves, lots of leaves. Put away that loud gas consuming leaf blower. The old fashion method is good exercise, environmentally friendly and it offers a chance to listen to nature.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Layered clothing
  • Rake
  • Gloves
  • Water
  • Leaf bags

    Health Tips

  1. Step 1

Clothe properly with layering. You can always take off a jacket and still have a sweatshirt on.

  2. Step 2

Exercise briefly before raking. Autumn leaves are light but raking them need arms, chest, shoulder, back and leg muscles. Stretch lightly, run in place, do squats, push-ups and sit-ups to get your muscles ready.

  3. Step 3

Rake with good posture. Move your body as a unit. Keep your back straight and your feet wide to keep from injury.

  4. Step 4

Hold the rake handle with hands apart. Place one hand near the end, the other about three quarters down. Wear a good pair of gloves to keep the blisters away.

  5. Step 5

Change from left hand to right hand to alternate your raking side. This lessens the chance of pulling muscles. Switch sides about every 5 minutes.

  6. Step 6

Take a break. Raking is strenuous so plan to rest every 15 minutes and take time to drink water.

  7. Raking Tips

  8. Step 1

Look to see if the leaves are dry. Wet leaves are heavier to bag.

  9. Step 2

    Rake with the wind.

  10. Step 3

Remove thatch. If you have a lot of leaves, take care of them first, and then try a second sweep to rake the thatch.

  11. Step 4

Keep autumn leaves under shrubs, around trees and in the flower garden. These provide good mulch for next year.

  12. Step 5

Pick up the leaves with knees bent then lift with your legs.

  13. Step 6

Fill a leaf bag to a weight you are comfortable lifting. Overfilling can break the bag and hurt your back.
