When homes or building get infested with pests, it's time for an exterminator. It's their job to rid of us unwanted roaches, mice, spider, fleas, or any other creature considered a pest. Though exterminating certainly isn't a glamorous career, it can be quite lucrative.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Step1
Meet the basic requirements. Most states require that you are 18 years of age, are of "good character" and can speak, read and write English. Good character generally means that you have never been convicted of a violent crime or a crime that involves the environment, pollution or terrorism.
Step2
Have no fear of pests or the places they live. Most exterminators work with a variety of pests and must spend time investigating not only the area where the pests are located but also what factors are contributing to the infestation. Common areas where an exterminator works include basements, attics, crawl spaces and under houses.
Step3
Contact your State Lead Agency. Each state has a department that regulates the licensure and requirements for exterminators. On a federal level, the US Environmental Protection Agency and the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act regulate policy.
Step4
Complete a state approved training program. You need to complete your state requirements for the number of hours that you must work under the supervision of a licensed professional. The requirement changes depending on the state where you live. Some states will require that you take an actual course in extermination in addition to completing supervised hours.
Step5
Pass the written exams. The Core exam measures your mastery of basic concepts which include knowing the rules and regulations, being able to mix the correct ratio of chemicals, knowledge of how to apply chemicals and safety procedures. The Category exam focuses on the specific area of pest control for which you are getting licensed. You need to be able to identify pest in the field and how to best remedy the situation.
Step6
Get your license. Once you have completed your state requirements, you can begin working as a licensed exterminator. You can start your own extermination company or you can work for an employer.
