How to Become an Animator

Animators create art that is used to create a sequence that will tell a story or communicate a message. An animator can be a freelance artist or can work for a production company. If you have artistic talent or are willing to develop it, you could be an animator.

        Have artistic talent. Natural talent shows itself early on in childhood. You need a foundation upon which you can hone your skills. While a formal education is not required, the better your talent, the better your chance is of being an animator.

        Create a portfolio. You must have samples of your best artwork available for prospective employers to view. Some animators will spend their own money to create an animated film. Entering competitions for films can increase your visibility in the field, award you cash prizes and be a great boost for your portfolio.

        Follow the industry ladder. Animators work at various positions within each area of focus. A few of these positions include background artists, layout artists, development artists, storyboard artists and computer animators. You need to be able to work as a team to create the vision of the project.

        Gain computer experience. You need some knowledge of computer animation and graphic design. Many employers require this as a part of the qualifications for their animators. Also more projects are using computer based animation.
