Swordfish are very well-known and recognizable because of their unique features. They can get to be more than 2,000 pounds, so do not try to catch them using a standard boat; go out on a deep sea fishing vessel. Use these steps to learn the identifying markers on the Swordfish for your next deep sea fishing excursion.

From Quick Guide: Deep Sea Fishing
Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for the trademark spear-like nose and pointed lower jaw. The nose and bottom of the jaw are both black. The face is black on top, gray behind the eye and reddish-silver on the cheek and neck.

  2. Step 2

Notice the back is black with a horizontal streak of reddish-brown on the side. The belly is silvery-blue. There are no spots or other markings.

  3. Step 3

See that the dorsal fin is almost straight up and resembles that of a shark. All of the fins are black with white ribbing that runs vertically.

  4. Step 4

Note that the swordfish's tail is blue where it connects to the body and then has the same ribbing on each fin
