How to Get Adoption Grants

Several nonprofit organizations provide grants to families who need assistance with their adoptions. However, many more people apply for assistance than there are funds available. Before you can get adoption grants, you need to know how to apply and whether you are likely to qualify.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Realize that because so many people apply for financial assistance, grant organizations have to pick and choose which families they can help. Unfortunately, not everyone who needs help will receive it.
Step2
Know that priority is usually given to people who are adopting special-needs children, older children or sibling groups. The idea behind this is that these children are harder to place. Grant foundations want to encourage families to consider adopting children who might not have a home otherwise.
Step3
Explain what you've done and what you plan to do to pay for your adoption. Priority is usually given to families who show the most financial need and to those who show that they've worked on their own to raise the funds.
Step4
Apply for any grants that you think you might qualify for. When completing your application, fill it out thoroughly and submit all requested documents. Include reference letters even if they're not requested. These help to show that you have others in your life who support your decision to adopt and who can vouch for your need for financial assistance.
Step5
Make sure to include details about the child, along with a picture if possible, if you've already identified a child to adopt. The people reviewing your application need to know who they're helping with the funds they're distributing.
