Kidney infections are most commonly caused by the bacteria known as e.coli. They frequently appear after a urinary tract infection spreads bacteria to the kidneys. Kidney infections can be uncomfortable, painful, and miserable. Treating the kidney infection requires self care and the help of a doctor.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
See a doctor. A prescription is necessary to get antibiotics. A doctor can run tests on the type of bacteria present by doing a urinalysis and culturing the bacteria. This will show what type of antibiotic will eliminate the bacteria, and therefore clear the infection.
Step2
Take all medication prescribed. Antibiotics are needed to treat a kidney infection, and all pills should be taken. Even if feeling better, the infection might not be completely gone, so finish the prescription completely.
Step3
Drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration leads to urinary tract infections, and urinary tract infections can lead to kidney infections. Staying hydrated also helps the body recover properly and helps the medication distribute through your body more efficiently.
Step4
Use over the counter pain relievers if necessary. Kidney infections can be painful--mainly in the lower back. Relieving the discomfort from the infection allows for rest. Use one with a fever reducer included in it if a fever is present from the infection.
Step5
Get plenty of rest. Rest allows the body to recover from the infection. Take a few days off of work if possible, and allow the body time to heal. Taking a break from working out also aids the body.
