Deadbolt locks should be on all exterior doors, including the one that leads to the garage. Installing deadbolt locks above the existing knob will add security and safety, and the locks are available in several finishes to match any doorknob. Here are some tips for installing a deadbolt lock.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Deadbolt kit
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • 1/8" drill bit
  • 2-3/8" drill bit
  • Pencil
  • Chisel
  1. Step 1

Align the deadbolt template on your door where you want to install the lock. You can use tape to hold the template in place.

  2. Step 2

Mark the center of the face bore and the center of the edge bore with a pencil. You will also mark the screw holes as shown on your template.

  3. Step 3

Drill the holes for the face bore and edge bore with an electric power drill and appropriate drill bit.

  4. Step 4

Mark the hole from your template for the faceplate, and chisel out the hole.

  5. Step 5

Adjust the deadbolt latch, and make any necessary adjustments for your door spacing before inserting the deadbolt latch.

  6. Step 6

Insert the lock and bolt assembly. Secure these with screws, but do not tighten completely.

  7. Step 7

Test the location and depth of the deadbolt lock with the door frame for alignment, and tighten the screws.

Tips & Warnings
  • Most deadbolt locks can be measured 40 inches from the floor for a good position, but you can place them anywhere you like.
  • Check to be sure the arrow is pointing up and facing outward when you insert the lock. You will need the other components to line up with the holes for complete assembly.
