How to Visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York houses one of the largest collections of fine art in the country. Exhibits include American Paintings and Sculpture, European Paintings, Sculpture Garden, Medieval Art and Islamic Art. You may need several days to view all of the pieces found at the Met. If your travels take you to New York City, read on to learn how to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Visit the Met any day of the week except Monday. The museum is closed only on major holidays and Mondays. It opens at 9:30 a.m. and closes at 5:30 p.m. on weekdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, the museum is open until 9:00 p.m.
Step2
Pay any amount you want for admission. The Met admits patrons no matter what they pay. Admission prices listed are only suggested amounts.
Step3
Find maps and information in all major languages. The Met offers visitors maps, brochures and tours in French, Spanish, Japanese and several other languages.
Step4
Take an audio tour. Make the most of your visit by taking the audio tour offered by the Met. Many of the art pieces throughout the museum have a special number listed next to it. You put the number into the audio player to hear commentary on the piece.
Step5
Check out any special exhibitions. Throughout the year, the museum will highlight artists and periods of art. Look at their website to find out what exhibits will be going on at the time of your visit.
Step6
Eat lunch at the Met. You have several dining options available when you visit the Met. There is a rooftop cafe, a food court and a sit-down restaurant.

Tips & Warnings

  • You are permitted to use charcoal or pencil to sketch while in the Met. Pens and watercolors are not allowed.
  • You can not use a flash when taking photographs at the Met. Don't take pictures in sections labeled "No Photography."
